Types of Systems Available
There are three principal types of Solar Power Systems available:
Grid Connected Solar Power Systems
In a grid-connect system, the house (or business) receives electricity from both the Solar Panels on the roof and the electricity grid. Surplus electricity from the solar panels, not used by the household, is exported to the utility grid and `bought back' when the solar system is not generating power i.e. at night time.
In most states in Australia consumers are paid a feed-in-tariff for the power they send back to the grid that is 3-4 times higher than the price they pay for electricity they take from the grid!
Remote Area or Stand Alone Solar Power Systems
In a Remote Area or Stand Alone Power System, the house has no connection to the utility grid and often relies on a bank of batteries to store power for use at night and during periods of limited sun.
Although the up-front cost of these systems can be higher, Remote Area Power Systems are a very cost effective solution for rural households or businesses faced with a large connection cost to the main electricity grid. They also allow a consumer or business to lock in their electricity price for the next 25 years - therefore removing themselves from the future risk of rising electricity prices.
A generator is also usually provided as an additional back up for these systems.
RV / Campervan Solar Power Systems
A Solar RV / Campervan Kit gives you the ultimate flexibility to travel wherever you like and to plug into the sun and convert sunlight into solar power for your everyday tasks.
Systems can also be combined with batteries to store power for night time use.
