How does the Saxon Solarstar Heat Pump Work?
The Saxon Solarstar Heat Pump is one of the cheapest and most energy efficient water heating systems on the market. Heat energy is drawn from the air and this allows hot water to be produced both day and night in all seasons of the year. No panels are required on your roof and the system does not have to be located in direct sunlight to enable efficient operation.
More Detail…
The refrigerant used in a heat pump boils at a temperature well below 0 degrees. The refrigerant runs through a fan coil (the evaporator) and because the refrigerant is colder than air, it collects heat energy from the air, which vaporizes the refrigerant. This vapor is then compressed, raising its pressure and temperature.
The high temperature vapor is passed from the compressor through coils of copper tube immersed in the water heater tank. As the refrigerant vapor condenses back into its liquid form, it gives off its heat to the water stored inside the tank.
When you turn on your hot tap, fresh, cold water from the mains is drawn through a second copper tube in the upper section of the tank. The cold water is heated as it passes through the tank by the surrounding hot water already heated by the hot refrigerant.
Tried and proven technology…
The Saxon Solarstar Heat Pump is easy to install, similar to a conventional electric water heater. The unit has the same components and works in much the same way as a normal household reverse cycle air conditioner. The only difference is that the heat pump produces heat rather than cold. Unlike a conventional solar water heater it can produce hot water both day and night, as well as cloudy days when the sun doesn't shine.

people
The Solarstar Heat Pump supplies hot water at a temperature of up to 70 oC, at a rate of up to 12 Litres/minute. An easy way to think of this is that most AAA rated shower heads will consume (hot and cold water) at a maximum rate of 9 Litres/minute. This means that for most households, even those with two bathrooms, where only one shower is used at any given time, the Saxon Solarstar is an excellent choice!
If you have a household with more than five people, you have more than one bathroom and regularly use both at the same, or you regularly use your other hot water appliances at the same time as you shower, then speak with a Dingo Solar Sales consultant as to which of our other mains pressure Solar Heat Pump products may better suit your needs. Either the Saxon Superflow range or the Rheem Next Generation Solar Heat Pump heaters are capable of supplying hot water to mutiple taps simultaneously and are suitable for the needs of large families.
Advantages of the Saxon Solarstar Heat Pump
- Save up to 70% of hot water energy use
- Long life recyclable copper tank
- Solar heating without the need for solar panels i.e. refrigerant gas collects heat from the surrounding air heated by the sun
- Operates in all weather conditions - rain, hail or sunshine
- Saves 3,000 litres of water by not discharging water to drain from expansion relief valves
- One of the most powerful heat pump compressors on the market – means faster recovery times
- Less maintenance with fewer valves and no anodes
- Quieter by design because noise is dispersed at ground level compared to heat pumps that radiate noise above ground level.
- Split system allows for a more flexible installation. Heat Pump and Tank can be installed inside or outside.
- Saxon Solarstar Heat Pumps can be installed internally in an area equivalent to a double garage.
- Safer by design – the tank is not pressurised
- Australian Made – Over 100 years of manufacturing experience
Keeping it Green!...How the Solarstar Reduces Carbon Emissions
Every Saxon Solarstar 400L heat pump water heater that is sold in Australia is awarded 38 Renewable Energy Certificates (RECS) by the Australian Office of the Renewable Energy Regulator. This is the highest of any heat pump currently on the market!
The 38 REC rating is a measure of the energy saved by the Saxon Solarstar over ten years compared to a standard electric element water heater. Each REC is the equivalent of saving 1 MWh of electricity or 960kg of CO2 from a coal fired power station. So the Saxon Solarstar over it's ten year lifetime save a massive 36.48 tonnes of CO2 or 3.648 tonnes of CO2 per year.
This is equivalent to keeping 1.16 cars off the road every year for the life of your water heater! So why not race out and get one today!
