All About Heat Pump Hot Water Systems
Heat Pumps: Solar Hot Water… without Solar Panels!
The average Australian home uses thousands of litres of hot water each year, with the cost of electricity to heat this water often comprising 30-40% of a households energy usage and costs. No other single appliance in the home costs more to run than a standard electric storage hot water system.
Heat pumps absorb heat energy from the air and transfer this energy to heat the water in your water tank. They run on electricity but are roughly three times more efficient than conventional electric water heaters, so when used in the right environment they save energy, save money and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This level of energy efficiency is equivalent to an electric boosted solar hot water system.
How do they work?
Heat pumps work on the same principle as your refrigerator, but instead of pumping heat out of the fridge to keep it cool, they pump heat into water. Heat pumps use electricity to pump a refrigerant gas around the system. The refridgerant gas picks up heat from the air (warmed by the sun) and is then compressed – causing it to super heat. The heat energy is then transferred to the water in the hot water storage tank.

Importantly, heat pumps do not require any panels on your roof, and they can work day or night, rain, hail or shine as long as they have access to free flowing air.
