Did you know that the average Australian household spends $1500 on energy bills each year and that water heating can account for almost 40% of your home’s energy use (source: Department of Environment NSW).

With this in mind, I thought we would recap some simple tips to help you keep your hot water heating bills down!

Tips for Running your Hot Water System Efficiently… and keeping those Power Bills Down!

Set the thermostat on your hot water system to deliver the lowest acceptable temperature. This will lower your running costs and extend your tank’s life. Note: with a storage (or tank based) hot water system the temperature must be kept above 60°C for safety reasons – to stop bacteria from growing in the tank.

If your installing a new hot water system ensure that it is placed as close as possible to all points of hot water use, to minimise the dead leg (or heat loss) in pipes – the best place is usually the main bathroom as this tends to be where the most hot water is used. If this is not possible, a spot close to the kitchen is usually a good alternative.

Insulate exposed hot water pipes – this will minimise heat loss in your pipes and therefore minimise the amount of water and power wasted when you first turn on your hot water taps. If your building – it is worthwhile considering insulating all hot water pipes in the house before the gyprock is installed. However, at a minimum it is good to do the first two metres leading from the hot water system. Closed cell rubber insulation is recommended – UV stabilised if outside, and solar rated if used on a Solar Hot Water system.

You can add extra insulation to a storage tank to reduce heat losses, saving you up to $15 a year (don’t restrict flues or air vents). Check with the manufacturer to ensure the warranty won’t be affected before installing extra insulation.

Keep the hot water system sheltered and protect any pilot lights from draughts.

Ensure your unit is not oversized for your household (I will do a later post on hot water system for your households needs).

Install a timer on peak rate electric storage units so that the unit runs once a day, rather than all day and night. If you have a time of use meter, set the timer so that the hot water system runs during the off-peak or shoulder periods.

To maximise performance of a solar or heat pump system, when possible do jobs requiring hot water early in the day. This allows the water remaining in the tank to be reheated by the sun (or the warmest day time air in the case of a heat pump). Consider running your heat pump or solar electric boost element on OP2 rather than continuous.

If you’re going away for a holiday or an extended period why not turn your unit off at the switchboard? Just remember to turn it back on when you get home!

Consider changing your electric hot water system to a five star gas, gas instantaneous, solar or heat pump hot water system while the government rebates last.

The wholesale market for STC’s has remained stubbornly in the low $20 region this week. As a result, Dingo Solar’s current price for Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) offered as a point of sale discount, for installations of Solar Hot Water and Heat Pump Hot Water systems after 1 January 2011 will remain at $20 (Incl GST) for the following week. With the announcement late last week, by ORER, of revised STC percentages for 2012 and 2013 it will be interesting to see if there will be any change in direction in the coming weeks.
